EDF Renewables Chile and Grupo Ibereólica Renovables have obtained approval for the financing of the extension of their Cabo Leones I wind farm, located in Chile’s Atacama region.

In service since 2017, Cabo Leones I will be composed of 12 additional turbines representing 60 MW, taking the whole farm up to 175.5 MW of installed capacities. Due to be completed by end-2021, this extension will supply enough electricity to power 163,000 Chilean households Jean-Christophe Puech, Director of EDF Renewables Chile, commented:“We are proud to reinforce our expansion in Chile through these additional 60 MW in Cabo Leones I. EDF Renewables is thus demonstrating its commitment to supporting Chile’s energy transition to a decarbonised model. Gregorio Álvarez, Grupo Ibereólica Renovables' president added : “This financing contributes to secure Cabo Leones I as one of the main wind farm in Chile and one of the first windfarm in the world to take advantage of the latest 5 MW SG 145 wind turbines developed by Siemens Gamesa in its latest technological platforms."

Social organizations of "Caleta Chañaral de Aceituno" (juntas de vecinos, firemen, syndicates...) have signed in Freirina'a notary the agreement for the creation of a social inversion fund that Cabo Leones I, II and III have established in favor of the local communities and local economic development. This is the conclusion of a succesful dialog process in which the Ministry of Energy, the SEREMI Enegía Atacama and the Municipality of Freirina took an important part alongside with the 3 Cabo Leones wind parks and the community.

This Monday, the teams of Cabo Leones wind farms representing Ibereólica Renovables, EDF Renewables Chile and Global Power Generation gathered in Freirina's town Hall where they met with lod mayor Cesar Orellana. The purpose of the meeting was the donation of 2,000 masks, digital thermometers and sanitization material such as hydroalcoholic gel and cuaternary ammonium. This initiative shows the strong commitment of Cabo Leones in order to help the local community in its fight against CoVid-19. The municipality's health and social services will manage the distribution of this material.

Today, representives of "Caleta los Burros Sur" community (Junta de Vecinos, Sindicatos, Agrupación Esfuerzo Alguero) have signed in Freirina's notary an agreement for the creation of a social inversion fund that the three companies Cabo Leones I, Cabo Leones II, Cabo Leones III - in a common effort - have established for this community, helping the territory's development. Following the signing, all stakeholders gathered in Freirina's town Hall to meet with the lord mayor Cesar Orellana.

A round of tests has been realized in december of 2019 and completed last february with "Coordinador Eléctrico Nacional". The conclusion is that for the first time, a wind farm could take part in the "Control Segundario de Frecuencia" thanks to automatic generation control (AGC).

As previously agreed, the Cabo Leones I team has offered a solar photovoltaic kit to the 2nd Caleta Chañaral de Aceituno Fire Brigade. 3 panels and 4 batteries were installed. This will be of a great use for the lightining of the premices as well as the electricity supply for everyday use. All tests have been proceeded with success to make sure the installation is fine and secure.
